Past Fellowship Recipients

 

SFLRLA Summer Fellowship (totaling $16,000)

Juan Jose Acosta - $4,000
Juan will be working at Centro Legal de la Raza this summer providing direct legal services to members of the Latino community.  he is especially excited about landlord/tenant cases and immigration cases.  He is currently a 1L at Golden Gate University

Brittany Armstrong - $4,000
Brittany will be working at the EEOC.  She will be working in the San Francisco District Office Enforcement Unit.  The focus of her work will be a new program created by the EEOC focusing on youth and employment issues.  In this program, she is excited to target the employment issues facing Latino and African American youth in San Francisco.  Brittany is currently a 2L at USF. 

Rodrigo Canido - $3,500
Rodrigo will be working this summer at California Rural Legal Assistance on three important projects (1) H-2A Guestworker project (assisting foreign guestworkers performing agricultural work), (2) Education Equity Project (helping rural immigrant youth avoid discriminatory disciplinary proceedings and initial assignments) and (3) Unemployment Insurance project.  We recommend $3,500 because Rodrigo's expenses are not as high as some of our other applicants as he will be living at home.  Because of his important project e do recommend funding him.  Rodrigo is currently attending Washington College of Law at American University.

Lizeth Cervantes -$3,500
Lizeth will be working at La Raza Centro Legal (SF) doing primarily immigration work.  Lizeth requested $3,500 to meet her expenses for the summer and the committee recommends funding her at this level.  Lizeth attends USF. 

Miguel Manriquez - $1,000
Miguel will be working at Bay Area Legal Aid in Oakland.  He will be focusing on housing issues.  Miguel is doing great work and is a strong candidate.  We recommend $1,000 because he currently has funding from other sources in the amount of $4,000.  Miguel is a 1L at Boalt Hall.

LGBT Fellowship (total $2,500)

Kelly Rodriguez - $5000 ($2,500 from BALIF, $2,500 from BALLF)
Kelly will be working with AIDS Legal Services in San Jose.  She will be the only Spanish speaking staff member in the organization.  The organization has explained that they are in desperate need of a Spanish speaking staff member to help serve the Latino community.  She will prepare and present trainings in both Spanish and English on topics affecting the Latino community.  She will work directly with LGBT Latino clients to conduct intake and provide direct legal services.  Kelly is a 1L at USF.

BAR Review Scholarship (total $3,500)

Cassandra Lopez - $3,500
Cassandra will be working next year at Centro Legal de La Raza in Oakland.  She has received an Equal Justice Works fellowship to fund her work next year.  Her project focuses on providing legal representation to families broken apart by immigration raids and detentions.  Specifically her project will focus on providing "know your rights" presentations and legal representation to individuals being detained by ICE.  She hopes to facilitate a network of attorneys willing to provide free or low cost immigration representation.  Cassandra is graduating from UC Davis School of Law
