In memory of Jeff Adachi
On Friday, February 22, 2019, Jeff Adachi passed away. SF La Raza Lawyers is saddened by the lost of this great public servant and social justice defender. Mr. Adachi set the standard nationally for criminal defense law firms. His dream was to build the best Public Defender’s Office in the country. As the only elected Public Defender in California he followed the mandate of the people which was to protect them from Constitutional violations and abuse of power. Jeff was a true juris doctor, a civil rights activist, legislative advocate, film maker, teacher, author, philosopher and humanitarian.
Jeff’s love for the Latino community was strong. His office policy was to fight for immigration safe offers. Jeff expanded the office to include an Immigration department to defend non-citizens in deportation hearings. He was a champion for language access in the courts rejecting non certified interpreters because it would hurt clients. He rallied at City Hall against ICE deportations and separation of children from their parents. He stood on the frontlines fighting the gang injunction at City Hall and in the courtrooms. He has singlehandedly changed the area of criminal defense world wide.
Jeff worked tirelessly to create a racially diverse office at every level from management to attorneys. He made attorney Marla Zamora the first Chicana Felony supervisor in the history of the Public Defender’s Office. He has received awards from La Raza Centro Legal twice for his tireless work for the Latino community.
We mourn his lost but we celebrate his spirt and accomplishments. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, his office, and all those impacted by the life of Jeff Adachi.
